Coast Guard warns: warm weekend weather, water still deadly cold

(USCG) With warm, sunny weather being forecasted for the upcoming weekend, the U.S. Coast Guard is reminding mariners that even though the air temperature feels warm, the water temperature is still cold and unforgiving.

The spring can be particularly dangerous as many boaters in their haste to get underway only consider the weather report and overlook water temperatures. A good guideline to follow is to always dress for the water, not the air. READ MORE

Sailing couple nearly die of carbon monoxide poisoning

(Daily Gazette) A couple almost died from carbon monoxide poisoning after a generator leaked on their yacht.

Paul and Susan Paul, both 61, were anchored at Mersea Stone, about a mile from Brightlingsea, when they started to feel the effects.

Mrs Paul fell unconscious, leaving her husband battling to get them to safety.

The carbon monoxide poisoning was caused by a leak in the tubing connected to the generator, which let exhaust fumes flood into the boat.

How to Rescue Somebody Who Is Drowning

(Santa Monica Patch) Earlier this month, Robert Rosenbaum of Marina del Rey fell into the ocean near the Santa Monica Pier when he attempted to retrieve something that had fallen off his boat. A female crew member, aided by a couple of jet skiers who were nearby, tried to rescue him. Rosenbaum drowned. In violation of Coast Guard regulations, no personal flotation devices were found on the boat. My heart goes out to Rosenbaum and his family. It was a death that could have been averted. READ MORE
