Chemical ship hijacked off Yemen

BBC NEWS-- Pirates have seized a Turkish chemical tanker off the coast of Yemen, Turkish maritime officials say. The tanker, the Karagol, was hijacked 26km (16 miles) off the coast of Yemen on its way to India. It was carrying 4,500 tonnes of unspecified chemicals and was manned by a 14-member Turkish crew. IMO Releases Agenda for MEPC

The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is expected to adopt proposed amendments to the MARPOL Annex VI regulations to reduce harmful emissions from ships, when it meets for its 58th session from October 6-10 at IMO Headquarters in London. The Committee will also continue its work on developing a mandatory regime to control greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from international shipping.

Maritime license required

The Suffolk Times- If your job requires access to a secure port or vessel, you'll need to be licensed by Homeland Security.

A Transportation Worker Identification Credential Center opened in the Sea Tow building in Southold Thursday, beginning a partnership between the private ship-rescuing company and the Department of Homeland Security. It is the first center of its kind in the region and the last to open on Long Island.

According to the Transportation Security Administration, applicants either have to currently be -- or applying to be -- a port worker requiring unescorted access to secure areas of maritime facilities and vessels regulated by Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002. Commercial HME (hazardous material endorsement) drivers licensed in Canada or Mexico are also required to be licensed.
