Fishing for Bass as Part of a Team

The New York Times -- Growing up in southern Illinois, not far from the Missouri line and
not close to much, Jake Bathon learned to catch bass on a man-made
lake. Mining
companies had stripped the rural counties southeast of St. Louis for
coal, leaving behind 15,000 pits turned to lakes, according to research
by Southern Illinois University. Farmers and ranchers turned many of
those lakes into fisheries. Now an appurtenant harvest of the lessons
learned on those fisheries — skills, intuition and patience, the
hardest crop for young boys — will be put to the test. Illinois, the first state to organize tournament bass fishing at the high school level, has set state finals for May 2009. READ MORE
